The rates offered, country by country
Each country brings its own rates, the same ones the invoice generator uses, read from the same rules files. In the United Arab Emirates, VAT has a standard rate of 5% (Decree-Law No. 8 of 2017, art. 3); amounts are in dirhams. In the United Kingdom, the rates are 20% and 5% (VAT Notice 700, § 3.3.1), in pounds. In France, the rates are 20%, 10%, 5.5% and 2.1%; in Spain, 21%, 10% and 4%; in Morocco, 20% and 10% since 2026. Amounts are then in euros, or in Moroccan dirhams.
Zero-rated and exempt supplies carry no VAT, so there is nothing to calculate: in the invoice generator, you set them line by line. Which rate applies to a given sale depends on the law of each country; this tool doesn't choose it for you.
How the calculation works
From a net amount, the VAT is the net amount times the rate, rounded to two decimals, and the gross amount is the net amount plus that VAT. For AED 1,000 at 5%, the VAT is AED 50.00 and the gross amount AED 1,050.00.
From a gross amount, the net amount is the gross amount divided by one plus the rate, rounded to two decimals, and the VAT is what remains. For AED 1,050 at 5%, the net amount is AED 1,000.00 and the VAT AED 50.00. Working back this way, the net amount and the VAT always add up to the gross amount you typed.
Rounding to the fils, penny or cent
The UAE Executive Regulation lets a business round VAT that falls on a fraction of a fils to the nearest fils, on a mathematical rounding (art. 61). The calculator does exactly that: half a fils or more goes up, less goes down. For pounds, euros and Moroccan dirhams, it rounds to the penny or the cent in the same way. On a UK invoice, the generator rounds the VAT of each line to the nearest penny, as VAT Notice 700 allows (§ 17.5.1); for a single amount, the result is the same.
Several rates on one invoice
This calculator works on one amount at a time. When an invoice mixes rates, for example a 5% line and a zero-rated line in the UAE, tick “Different rates per line” in “Line options” in the generator: each line gets its rate, the VAT is calculated and rounded once per rate, and a summary by rate prints under the totals.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my VAT differ by one fils or penny from another tool?
Some tools round the VAT of every line, others only the total. The calculator rounds once; the generator rounds once per rate, or once per line in the UK. On an invoice with many lines, the two methods can differ by a fils, a penny or a cent.
Which rate applies to my business?
It depends on what you sell and where. The calculator offers only the rates in force in each country's rules; check your case with the tax authority or your accountant.
Is there a calculator in French, Spanish or Arabic?
Yes, each for its own country: in French for France, in Spanish for Spain, and in Arabic for Morocco.
Can I calculate VAT for another country?
Not here: the calculator offers the five countries whose rates it can source, the UAE, the UK, France, Spain and Morocco. Elsewhere, choose “Other country” in the generator and type your rate. Not VAT-registered in the UK? See the sole trader invoice. For UAE invoices, see the UAE tax invoice guide.
